A large portion of them are expected to benefit from President Obama's new immigration policy.
The president announced Friday, children brought to this country illegally will not be deported if they are law abiding citizens.
It doesn't mean Texas will turn from red to blue anytime soon.
But the Hispanic community overwhelmingly feels this is a move in the right direction.
The President called this new policy the right thing to do.
The editor of the El Bilingue News here in Amarillo agrees with him.
He says the policy will be seen by 70% - 80% of the Hispanic community as a measure of good faith.
Critics of the president including panhandle congressman Mac Thornberry say the move is an overreach by the president, and they think immigration reform should be decided by congress, not the White House.
WTAMU political science professor Dr. David Rausch, says this policy will not effect the presidential election here in Texas come November but it will get more young voters to the polls.
