Mo. Lawmakers Consider Tougher Tanning Regulation for Teens

(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Teens in Missouri could one day find it tough to tan.
State lawmakers are considering a bill that would call for teenagers under the age of 17 to get a parent's permission to use a tanning bed.
Lawmakers in the House already gave the bill a first-round approval.
Dermatologists say the number of skin cancer cases is growing from the use of tanning beds.
"We have a melanoma epidemic going on that's now the number one cancer in 20-30 year olds," said Dr. Melody Stone, dermatologist. "We used to never see melanoma in this age group and starting over the last 20 years, the number has been increasing. And, what is new or different? Tanning beds."
Opponents argue that the government should not regulate parental consent for activities that are legal.
Just last year, California became the first state in the country to ban tanning beds for anyone under 18.
