Gingrich Expected to Step Out of 2012 Presidential Bid

By: WROC-TV
Updated: April 25, 2012
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is expected to suspend his campaign for the GOP presidential bid.

Reports say Gingrich is expected to make the formal announcement sometime within the next week. This comes after fellow Republican Mitt Romney swept five more state delegations. Primaries for the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Delaware and Connecticut all resulted in wins for Romney. Gingrich fell behind in polls and delegate counts over the last few months as front-runners Romney and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum surged forward. Santorum dropped out of the race two weeks before the April 24th primaries.

Gingrich only took home two states during his campaign, which were South Carolina and his home state of Georgia.
