WMBD/WYZZ TV – DeKalb -- Just two years after the state of Illinois outlawed the commercial slaughter of horses, lawmakers are looking to lift the ban. The proposal would reopen the slaughter plant in DeKalb. Supporters say horses now face a terrifying journey to Canada or Mexico where the treatment is worse and the slaughter inhumane. Opponents say horses are pets and should be treated the same as cats and dogs. The proposal now heads to the full state house for a vote.
