WMBD/WYZZ - PEORIA --
Northmoor Observatory will be getting a new dome on Monday.

Wednesday a crane removed the dome off the observatory located on Donovan Golf Course.  The Peoria Astronomical Society has been fundraising since 2000 to get the $75,000 needed to replace it. The money came in part from member donations and Caterpillar.

“It was having hunks of rust coming off and we were concerned with the structure itself.  And so we said, let's go with a new, improved dome that will last a long time,” said Richard Tennis of the Peoria Astronomical Society.

The observatory will be open to the public May 2nd. Officials expect the building to be fully operational in mid to late March.
