WMBD/WYZZ TV – PEORIA – Controversy continues to follow US Senator Roland Burris.  While at a stop in Peoria, Burris is defending himself tonight amid allegations he perjured himself during the impeachment proceedings of former Governor Rod Blagojevich.  Critics say he failed to disclose multiple conversations he had with Blagojevich’s brother about contributions before his appointment to the senate seat vacated by Barack Obama.

Burris says he did nothing wrong, and blamed both republicans and the media for blowing this out of proportion.  He says he had talked with the former governor's brother, Rob, about being interested in the open senate seat - but that was as far as it went.  Burris says he voluntarily submitted an affidavit regarding his appointment by Blagojevich.

He says that was the only item he was asked to provide information on.  But recently, Burris submitted another affidavit to clarify his testimony during the impeachment process, saying he did talk with the governor's brother.  Burris says in no way did he except money or was involved in any pay-for-play situations as some have accused.

Senator Burris is in river city as part of what he's calling a state-wide "Listening Tour."  He hopes to connect with various local leaders in person.  Tonight he was the guest speaker at the Peoria County Democrat’s Presidents’ Day Dinner.
