If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. The first vote to overhaul the Illinois teacher pensions failed Wednesday but a second vote, by Illinois Senate President John Cullerton passed. Cullerton's amended plan deals with the state teacher retirement system and would offer teachers a choice regarding retirement health care or reduced annual cost of living increases. Cullerton claims it would save the state 40 billion dollars over 30 years while opponents claim the plan doesn't go far enough.
