EAST PEORIA - A local group of teens is taking action, in hopes of inspiring their peers to make the right choices.

The Tazewell County Youth Board led the 24th annual Teen Conference Tuesday at Illinois Central College.

More than 200 teenagers practiced everything from self-defense to internet safety through a series of workshops.

Youth Board President Morgan Gain said the conference aims to address two big problems - drug use and distracted driving. "We basically aim to teach kids the disadvantages of reckless driving, anti-substance abuse, we look at anti-alcohol as well for underage drinkers and so we basically want to become a positive example among our peers."

The conference is sponsored by the Tazewell County Health Department.

It also offers workshops specifically tailored for junior high school students.
