Illinois' unemployment rate rose in January to 9 percent, up from 8.7 percent in December, according to data released Thursday from the Illinois Department of Employment Security. The 9 percent level is almost as high as the 9.1 percent level in January 2012. The biggest job losses were in trade, transportation and utilities where 5500 jobs were lost while government shed 1500 jobs. The biggest gains were in financial and educational and health services.
