As part of Wednesday's national campaign, "Spread the Word to end the 'R' word," Janine Palma having students sign a banner pledging to stop using a hurtful term.
The campaign focused on respect asks students to keep an open mind and treat all people the same no matter their challenges.
"Not using the r-word, or the word, "retarded" in a negative or derogatory way," said Palma. "Just stop for a moment, pause, and use respectful words. Let's use words that build people up, not bring people down."
Students at Pontiac Township High School also took part in the national event.
They've created a video called "You Abuse the Word" reminding students to think before they something hurtful.
