Unit Five to Hold Redistricting Meeting, Targets Elementary Schools

NORMAL- A case of overcrowding is prompting McLean County Unit Five schools to redistrict elementary students.
It's proposing two options:
Turn Brigham, its early childcare development center, back into an elementary school, or simply add Kindergarten and first grade to its current fleet of children.
Benjamin Elementary has about 200 students more than it should.
A similar situation can be found at Cedar Ridge.
Redistricting would be a temporary solution as staff plan for an east side elementary school.
"It was a decision that took us five meetings to get there," said District Superintendent Gary Niehaus. "We probably impacted the least amount of students and we did it in a format that probably is in our best interest at this point."
A public forum to discuss the options will take place Thursday night at Parkside Junior High School.
The meeting starts at six pm.
