PEKIN-Students from downstate Illinois gathered in Pekin today for a competition focused on creativity.
"Destination Imagination" is a contest for students- challenging all aspects of their mind, including science, engineering, and fine arts.
Over 40 teams across the region battled it out at Pekin Broadmoor Junior High for a chance to go to the state competition.
Many have been working on these pieces since last year.
Students say being able to think outside the box at Destination Imagination helps them in school.
Sixth Grader Lauren Spanos said, "It changes your perspective on things. It makes you think that, when you are writing fiction stories - it makes you think more of what you can do, instead of just the normal ' she broke her arm and then it came back'."
The top three in the four age groups today advance to the State competition.
From there - winners move on to the global tournament - held every year in Knoxville, Tennessee.
