Peoria State Senator Dave Koehler introduced a bill Wednesday to require labeling of genetically
engineered foods in Illinois. The legislation was drafted with the support of the Food and Water
Watch, a consumer advocacy group.
If passed, the bill would require labeling for all foods containing more than one percent GE
ingredients. This includes plants altered in a lab with foreign genetic material to create novel
genetic combinations and exhibit traits that do not occur in nature.
