Reaction came swiftly from the business community, already hit last year with increased
corporate income taxes, to the governor's proposal to raise the minimum wage. The Illinois
Retail Merchants Association says the state already has the fourth highest minimum wage in
the country and raising it again would kill jobs. Meanwhile, East Peoria State Representative Mike
Unes says the governor's speech, in Unes words, lacked details in regards to fixing the state's
fiscal problems. Unes says the governor's speech was far too focused on social issues and
not nearly enough on fiscal issues.
