BLOOMINGTON- At a seemingly ordinary Super Bowl party Sunday, Brian Southey sat filled with anticipation and a bit of stress.
But it's not because of the game.
It's because of Abbey Fitzpatrick, his girlfriend of five years.
"I can't wait to just spend my life with Abbey," said Southey proudly. "I wanted to buy her a ring, and I just haven't financially been able to afford it."
But with the help of WMBD-31 and Bremer Jewelry Southey's wish came true.
During the second quarter commercial break he appeared on TV, and in front of countless households, asked Fitzpatrick for her hand in marriage.
"I'm just over the moon! I'm so excited! It's a huge surprise!" exclaimed Fitzpatrick.
To Southey's relief she said yes.
"I'm extremely excited," said Southey. "I kind of feel like I want to cry I'm so happy. I can't wait to spend my life with Abbey now. It's an amazing feeling."
"I've wanted this for so long," added Fitzpatrick. "We've been working towards it for so long."
Now, with a sparkling diamond to wear on her hand, the couple looks forward to a bright future filled with new adventures.
"I thank Bremer so much and WMBD-31," said Southey. "It's amazing and great that they did that for us and we can't be appreciative enough!"
Southey won the Bremer Jewelry Super proposal contest allowing him to pop the question on air and get a complimentary ring.
The pair hopes to wed this fall.
