WASHINGTON, DC - After four years in office, Ray LaHood announced Tuesday that he's retiring from his post as US Transportation Secretary. A former Congressman, LaHood is the only Republican in the President's cabinet.
On the US Transportation Department's website, LaHood says he's proud of the work his department has done, including the distracted driving initiative. He says his team help jump start the economy with $48 billion in transportation funding, and awarded more than $2.7 billion in transportation grants to 130 projects across the country. In a statement, President Obama says "every American who travels by air, rail, or highway can thank Ray for his commitment to making our entire transportation system safer and stronger."

Peoria County Sheriff and long time friend, Mike McCoy, says it's a loss for Peoria.
"Transportation is not just roads, it's our planes and trains and everything else and that was such a high level job and he was on the inside know and he used that knowledge and that expertise he had to help all of us in central Illinois and we're going to miss him in that position.
LaHood says he will stay in office until a successor is chosen.
