State Unemployment Unchanged

December unemployment in Illinois remained unchanged , according to a release Thursday
from the Illinois Department of Employment Security. One year ago, the December rate was
9.7 percent. Payrolls decreased by 7600 in December, nearly one third of which were temporary
layoffs with return to work dates in January. State officials say they expect moderate job growth
but say there will be monthly up and down movements as worries continue for the debt
ceiling in Washington. Illinois added 1700 to the unemployment rolls. There was a drop in
manufacturing jobs but were was a slight increase in information, construction and leisure jobs.
Meanwhile, Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza is attempting to persuade the state not to close the Galesburg office by mid March. The mayor has has been discussing the issue and says IDES has
agreed a proposal, addressing the challenges in maintaining an IDES presence in Galesburg, will
be developed and submitted and given consideration by the state.
