Peoria Councilman Back on Primary Ballot

Peoria Councilman Gary Sandberg is back on the primary ballot, thanks to an opinion issued
Tuesday afternoon by a Peoria judge. Sandberg is currently an at large councilman but is
seeking a seat from the first district. Last month, the Peoria Election Commission kicked
Sandberg off the ballot, arguing the city election code requires a candidate to live in the district
at least a year. However, Judge Michael Brandt disagreed and reversed the election commission's
decision. The judge says the municipal code is ambigous and it isn't right to restrict ballot
access in such a case. If Sandberg wins the first district seat, a replacement will have to be
appointed to fill his at large seat.
