BLOOMINGTON- Deer hunting season is on hold for now, but a local group is giving spare meat to those that need it most.
They're called the "McLean County Sportsmen."
It's an association of people that love to hunt and fish.
Three times a year they make stops at various charities handing out deer donations.
Friday, the group could be found at Wood Hill Towers Apartments, giving away nearly 1,000 pounds of meat.
Member Dave Nafziger says deer is lean and good source of protein.
It's a key nutrient some people don't always get to eat.
"It makes good spaghetti sauce, tacos, goulash, hamburgers. That's why people like it," said Nafziger.
The group hosts a fundraiser each year to buy the meat from a local butcher.
They've been giving deer to the needy for more than a decade.
