PEORIA - A
proposed state law that would provide drivers licenses to illegal immigrants is
one step closer to being official, and it could mean big savings on your car
insurance.
Tuesday, the state House of Representatives passed a bill that gives illegal immigrants the chance to get driver licenses. It passed the Senate in December.
Governor Quinn says he expects to sign the bill and an increase in insured drivers means big savings for anyone with car insurance.
The bill says licenses cannot be given without passing a driving exam and getting car insurance. Quinn says drivers in the state will save $46 million per year in insurance premiums by making sure more people are insured.
The bill now heads to the
governor's desk. The governor issued a statement commending lawmakers for passing the measure, saying Illinois roads will be safer if every driver is trained to drive safely.
