PEORIA--A new law on radon is in place to protect children at day cares and in-home day cares.
Starting January 1st of 2013, the state of Illinois passed a law requiring that all licensed day cares and in-home day cares be tested, by a licensed radon technician, for radon.
Radon is a harmful gas that is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
Day care facilities are required to post the most current radon measurement results but the law does not require them to reduce radon levels if they exceed standards.
Starting in 2014 another new law requires that licensed day cares and in-home day cares provide proof of radon testing as part of the initial application or license renewal process.
For more information about radon, including lists of IEMA-licensed measurement and mitigation contractors visit the states website here or call the Radon Hotline at 800-325-1245.
