BLOOMINGTON- The holidays are officially over, but Home Sweet Home Ministries is continuing to receive the gift of electronics.
The organization that provides food and shelter to the needy is giving old stereos, computers, and even coffee pots a new purpose.
Staff members say these items have been pouring into its warehouse since Christmas ended.
As of January last year, the state of Illinois made it illegal to throw electronics into the trash.
Spokeswoman Sabrina Burkiewicz says as people received new gadgets as gifts, more chose to go green with their old items.
"December 30th, we started to see a big increase in the number of people coming to us with donations, and that continued through the 31st, and with that we got lots of electronics," Burkiewicz explained.
In one week's time, staff members estimate they've received more than 50,000 pounds of electronics.
The money made from those sold will support Home Sweet Home Ministries' operation.
