NORMAL- A national "award winning" drug specialist says youth addiction is on the rise.
Bill White has been a substance abuse researcher since the 1960's.
He and a team of co-workers started what is now, Chestnut Health Systems, a center that helps addicts get clean.
Over the years White has built one of the largest addiction studies archives in the country.
It's packed with material focused on drug history and treatment.
White says we've come a long way.
In the 1800's doctors used cocaine to treat patient withdrawals.
"During that time period as it turns out were loaded with opium, and morphine, and cocaine and other such substances so it's part of the history of addicted people and their families being financially exploited," explained White.
Doctors and teachers across the country use White's archive as a research tool.
Over the years he's helped hundreds of people overcome drug and alcohol addictions.
