NORMAL--A scam is circulating the town following voter approval to buy electricity in bulk.

Known as electrical aggregation, those who join the program will pay a lower electric rate.

The town is currently searching for suppliers and plans to send notices to people allowing them to opt in or out of the initiative.

But City Manager Mark Peterson says problem is people are going door to door pretending to be with the town.

They're trying to sign residents up for a different electric plan--one he warns won't lead to bigger savings.

"If somebody calls you on the phone or they knock at your door and they ask you to sign up for their electrical contract, they're not part of the Town of Normal's aggregation program," said Peterson.

If residents sign up for a different plan, they'll be ineligible to take part in Normal's electrical aggregation.

Leaders say if they join the town's plan, people can expect to see a 30 percent savings on their bill next year.
