MCLEAN COUNTY - Former Illinois governor Jim Thompson says it's time for imprisoned former governor George Ryan to be free.
Thompson is Ryan's attorney. He spoke in McLean County Thursday morning.
Ryan is set to enter a work release program in January. He's been fighting his conviction for years, but has never been successful.
Thompson says Ryan has had enough.
"He's lost a wife and a brother while he's been in prison," Thompson said. "So he has paid his penalty in spades. It's time for him to be a free man once again."
Ryan should be released from the work program by next summer.
