EAST PEORIA - A local dentist wants to keep your child's sweet tooth from becoming a cavity.

Dr. Erin Shanahan with the Maple Shade Dental Group is offering to pay children one dollar per pound of candy they donate to his office.

Gooey candies often get stuck between teeth and cause decay, so he is hoping kids will take him up on his offer.

The "buy back" also serves a good cause, as all of the donated candy is given to Operation Santa for holiday care packages sent to troops serving overseas.

"They can pick the candy that they like, but then bring the rest to us. They'll get nice prizes for it. The troops overseas will be able to use the candy. Parents can be happy knowing that their kids teeth are safe," says Dr. Shanahan.

The candy "buy back" takes place tomorrow from 4p.m. until 6p.m. at three Maple Shade offices in Dunlap and East Peoria.
