PEORIA -- The Red Cross of the Heartland has nine people out east to help with Sandy's destruction. One local woman is helping comfort those who have lost everything.

Disaster Mental Health Professional Emily Barr is helping in a shelter north of Long Island.

She said the area is completely destroyed... trees are down and there is debris everywhere.

More than 300 people are staying at the shelter she's working at. She said people are doing OK but many aren't aware of how bad the damage really is.

Barr said, "Folks are in a state of shock and are very stressed and I'm here to try and help comfort them and give them information to start deciding I guess what they are going to do next."

The Red Cross said donations are the best way to help. To donate visit www.redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
