Healthcare is growing in Hopedale.
Thursday, leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony for a seven million dollar expansion project at Hopedale Medical Complex.
The 30,000 square foot addition will include a new emergency department, intensive care unit, and larger private patient rooms.
The current hospital is more than 50 years old.
Parts of it will be demolished to make room for new outpatient services.
The hospital's Chief Operation Officer says the upgrades will give more people the quick care they need.
"This is just the first phase," said Mark Rossi. "We think there's going to be a second phase which will include long term care, perhaps an upgrade of the operating room and adding some senior housing such as cottages and condos."
Construction is set to begin next spring.
The new facility should be finished by 2014.
