PEORIA -- The new Caterpillar Visitor's Center wasn't only built to look good, but also to be good for the environment.

The building is certified LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council.

It's a certification that means it's at the top of the chart when it comes to conserving energy and reducing waste.

The Visitor's Center Manager Kathryn Spitznagle said there are solar panels on the CAT parking garage next door that provide some energy for the building and the landscaping is all native vegetation that requires minimal watering.

She said aiming to be sustainable is part of the company. "Well it's important because Caterpillar is a sustainable company and sustainability is also important to our customers in the work that they do around the world every day, so it's important to us that we walk the talk."

She also said the lighting and electricity inside the building is designed to save 30 percent more energy.
