PEORIA--This year marks the first season in Illinois since 1929 for river otter trapping.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) says in previous years the population of otter has been low. They say this year they've seen increasing numbers and feel comfortable letting people trap them.

IDNR says they are only to be trapped and not hunted and when you catch one you have 2 days to get an otter registration permit. They also say that trappers are only allowed 5 otters per season.
