18th District Congressional Candidates: Healthcare

In the race
for the 18th Congressional District seat, Republican Incumbent Aaron Schock is
facing Democrat Steve Waterworth.
Our question: What are
your thoughts on President Obama's government mandated healthcare plan?
Aaron Shock:
I don't want anyone to go without access to
healthcare. The reality is, putting the government in charge of our healthcare
and just declaring that everybody's covered is not the solution.
We need to get people more in control of
their dollars, give individuals the same deductibility that companies enjoy for
their health insurance dollars that they spend, allow for more competition
across state lines, pass comprehension tort reform so there's not all these frivolous
lawsuits - that will help drive down the cost of lawsuits. But, putting people
in charge of their own money is the best determinate of cost controls.
Steve Waterworth:
Our old system was
not sustainable. We could continue on having millions and millions of people
without health insurance. Their only insurance was to go to an emergency room -
not a good way of providing health care for people - not efficient. I think
this system is going to create a more efficient system, for more people. People
that are hurting are going to be able to get care. And it's just, it's a start.
Probably not perfect, obviously.
