TOULON- A Toulon mom, accused of abandoning her three-week-old baby, was back in court Friday.
Kendra Meaker didn't enter a plea to the charges against her. She's being charged with endangering the life of a child and lying to police after her newborn, Mia Graci Thompson, was found in a ditch.
Meaker's lawyer said Meaker is confused about the case and unfit to stand trial. He asked if Meaker's preliminary hearing could be pushed back so that she could be examined by a doctor.
Mia's father, Timothy Thompson said he could understand how she'd need to see a professional after what she did to his daughter.
"She probably does need psychiatric help with the whole thing that just happened on the 27th, but I mean before that she was perfectly fine. She was happy, she took care of both kids," Thompson said.
Thompson said he and Meaker had a good relationship before she was arrested. He said he doesn't know what to say to Meaker so he's not saying anything.
"Right now I don't talk to her. We are separated because of this," Thompson said.
Thompson's mother, Belina Coley, said she doesn't hate Meaker.
"I cannot hate anybody. That's not what God wants us to do. But we can hate the fact of what she did and dislike it," Coley said.
In the meanwhile Thompson's learning how to be a single parent.
"They are technically Irish twins so I mean it is a little tough taking care of them," he said.
He's glad to have both girls living with him now, but is thinking about a difficult conversation he'll have with them later down the road.
"I mean when the time does come and when they are really able to understand what happened I'll explain what really happened," Thompson said.
Meaker's preliminary hearing was pushed back to November 16th, but it could be sooner if Meaker's medical exam results come in sooner.
