BLOOMINGTON - The City of Bloomington is trying to do damage control after a crash involving an assistant police chief.
Last Wednesday night, authorities say Bob Wall crashed his own car into a light pole while off duty near the intersection of Veteran's Parkway & Ireland Grove Rd. in Bloomington.
Wall is accused of leaving the scene to drive a short distance and report the crash from home. He also admitted to drinking earlier in the day, but passed a sobriety test.
The test was given after officers had responded to Wall's home initially.
Chief Randy McKinley instructed the officers to return to the home after getting a call about the crash and learning the officers detected a slight odor of alcohol on Wall.
The assistant chief received three tickets and is being investigated internally to see if there will be any disciplinary action.
McKinley confirmed Wednesday an independent, third party is also getting involved to review the case.
However, the city is not identifying the agency. McKinley would only say it is in Illinois and is not affiliated with the Bloomington Police Department.
He said the goal is to maintain the public's confidence.
No timeline was given for when the review will be complete. McKinley said once it's done, he will decide if Wall will be disciplined.
Wall is not on any sort of administrative leave.
