PEORIA -- The Peoria German-American Central Society is celebrating a German tradition today.
It's called Schlachtfest. In English, it means "Slaughter fest."
It's a time when the Germans used to get their meat ready for the winter months.
Today, people gathered in Hickory Grove Park to get their fill of German food and drinks.
The festival also kicks off German-American Heritage month, another chance to celebrate the German culture.
Spokesman Jeff Pulfer said, "Promote German culture, and get people out here it's almost like a mini-Oktoberfest, but you know, it's much smaller but you got the official German beer garden behind you with tall trees and the park benches, German music, German food.)>>
The German-American Central Society will hold it's next event Nov. 24.
