In the race for the 17th congressional district seat, Republican incumbent Bobby Schilling is facing Democrat Cheri Bustos.
Bobby Schilling:
You know, what I think you have to do is
you've got to know the mission, and once the mission is complete. I think once
you set deadlines up like the President has been doing what you do is set up
more casualties with our war fighters across the world and I think that is a
tragedy in itself.
We have to have an end game and once you get
to that end game that's when you start to draw out. But you don't tell the
enemy when you're going to draw out.
Cheri
Bustos:
We were in two wars and we didn't properly
fund those wars.
And that's
the problem we are having with our budget deficits and really the state of the
economy is a result of not thinking everything through. We enter these wars and
then we don't have a way of funding them.
I think when you're looking at wars; number
one you have to make sure our country is safe and that we have a strong defense
but we need to get out of that war. The president has a plan to do that and I
support that plan. I would never want to take politics over what the military
is instructing. If we have an exit strategy we need to make sure we are talking
to the people who are in the war, our leaders, and following what their advice
is on that.
