PEORIA- The mission said thanks to the generosity of Peoria Christian students, its food pantry is no longer empty.
Peoria Christian elementary and middle school students competed on Thursday to see who could donate the most food.
They lined up outside the two schools and passed cans and boxes of food they collected, piling it all high into a truck.
Fourth grader Maria Brooks brought in more than 1000 cans.
"My mom and I and my sisters and my sisters friends, we went door to door and got them," Brooks said.
Mariah's contribution helped the elementary school students claim the bragging rights; they donated 4,200 pounds of food. Together both schools donated 5,550 pounds of food to South Side Mission.
