NORMAL - Normal Mayor Chris Koos is trying to put an end to distracted driving.
Koos is issuing a proclamation declaring Tuesday, September 18 "No Text on Board Pledge Day."
His goal is to get people to focus on the road and not on their cell phone. Koos compares distracted driving to running with your eyes closed as fast as you can.
He knows it's hard changing peoples' habits, but he is hoping his message at least gets people to think twice.
"I don't think this is going to push anything in terms of changing behaviors. Hopefully it does, but we're just trying to raise awareness of the dangers of texting while driving," he said.
Koos got his idea from a national AT&T campaign called "It Can Wait."
He said Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois Municipal League are also on board with the cause.
Koos said studies show many people still text and drive even though they know it's dangerous.
