PEORIA -- A major gas leak on the south side caused a brief evacuation of homes near Starr and Madison Park Terrace.
It happened when a contractor was digging out a tree stump and accidentally ruptured a high pressure gas line.
Peoria Police and Fire responded to the area at 2:45 this afternoon.
A worker for Ameren was in the process of figuring out how to fix the leak. Ameren said the gas is evaporating into the air and the area is now safe.
