Much of Corn Crop Poor-Soybeans Improve

By: Bob Larson
Updated: September 10, 2012
Most of the state received beneficial rains last week but it may be too late to help the suffering corn crop. 75 percent of the corn has matured and 21 percent has been harvested. However, 75 percent of the corn crop is either in very poor or poor condition; 41 percent very poor and 34 percent poor. Only five percent of the corn is considered in good shape. However, the rains may have helped some of the soybeans. 60 percent of the crop is turning yellow compared to just 40 percent last year and 39 percent of the crop is in fair condition, 18 percent in good shape and only one percent in excellent condition while 20 percent of the crop is still in very poor condition. Subsoil moisture levels improved slightly to 36 percent very short, 47 percent short and 17 percent adequate.
