PEORIA - Firefighters said Saturday one of their calls could have ended very differently.
As such, they're thankful no one is hurt after a fire started inside a child's bedroom.
The call came in around 5:00 p.m. at Green Diamond Apartments.
Engine companies arrived and found a fire inside the closet of a child's bedroom. Everything was under control in a few minutes.
People were already outside when first responders arrived.
Battalion Chief Keith Wagner said an investigator believed the fire started because a child was playing with a lighter.
Wagner said people in the complex are lucky the flames didn't spread more quickly since it is full of multi-unit apartments.
Fire damage is isolated to the child's closet, Wagner said. But there is smoke damage to the rest of the apartment.
The family is staying with relatives until it is cleaned. No injuries were reported.
Wagner did not have a cost estimate for the damage Saturday night.
