PEORIA - Heartland Partnership will follow through with recommendations to restructure its organization.
Interim CEO Cal MacKay said big changes, including layoffs, are already in the works.
Soon, the Economic Development Council will no longer be under the Heartland Partnership. As of Wednesday, neither will regional port district, Transport.
According to MacKay, several positions have been cut, and multiple employees have chosen to resign. The moves are based on expert recommendations to restructure the Heartland Partnership and the EDC. A special committee, the Regional Economic Steering Committee, will oversee the changes.
Heartland board chairman Mark Spenny has been appointed to the committee. MacKay said his addition will help the organization address future changes. However, he said not all of them will be easy.
"We have to face reality that part of Heartland Partnership was the Economic Development Council. And if that moves out from underneath the Heartland Partnership, we don't need all those people anymore. We have to restructure for those reasons," MacKay said.
MacKay expects to have a better idea of Heartland Partnership's future by September. The organization's finances are in good shape right now, but problems could arise if swift actions aren't taken.
