There's another person vying for the city's top spot.
Small business owner John Hanson says he's ready to make a difference in the city.
The former alderman and District 87 school board member wants better communication between government and citizens.
Hanson says too often city leaders and community members aren't on the same page when it comes to local decisions.
He discovered this after being seated on city council six years ago.
"As an alderman, my perceptions as a citizen were not necessarily a reality to what was going on in government," Hanson explained. "A lot of it was to the detriment of me because I thought I was educated on things and it wasn't the way things were actually working."
If elected, Hanson wants to improve the quality of life for area residents and reform the city's pension system.
Others declared in the 2013 mayoral race include Alton Franklin, Tari Renner and Lex Green.
