EAST PEORIA -- We could get a few inches of rain this holiday weekend. Area marinas are urging boaters to keep a watchful eye.
Fon Du Lac Chief of Police Michael Johnson said heavy rainfall can put smaller boats at risk.
He said it's best to check on your boat daily and make sure its prepared for the weather.
Johnson said, "What people need to do when they have this much rain coming is make sure they've got an effective pump that works in their boat and a lot of boats they'll put an automatic float on it, so if it does rain, the float will kick on and the pump the water out."
He said it may only take three to five inches of rain to sink a small John boat, but it varies depending on size.
If you plan to leave your boat unattended, he suggests letting your marina know.
