LACON -- It's been 50 years since the Sparland and Lacon communities have come together to form a volunteer fire department.
Today they're celebrating their accomplishments.
Fire Chief Brian Synder said he wants to show the community how the department has changed over time.
The department covers more than 60 square miles, but Synder said they owe a lot to their community. He said, "We have a lot of big fires, you know the people always look back and the stories go on and on and on of "Oh I remember this and I remember that" and what's most important when we always look back is that if there's a big issue or a big incident happens in Lacon we can always count on the community backing us."
Synder said the department currently has 21 firefighters.
