PEORIA -- The Center for Disease Control said it's seeing the highest rates of Whooping Cough in 50 years.

Local Walgreens Pharmacy Manager Joe Hersemann said getting the vaccination is your best protection.

He said at first you may just think you have the common cold, but you could be coughing for over 100 days.

Infants are at the highest risk for the illness and Hersemann advises anyone around young children to get the shot. "Siblings, parents, grandparents, new mothers and fathers, anybody who is going to be around an infant definitely should come in and get one. That's just to prevent them from getting it and maybe passing it on to the infants."

Walgreens has seen a three-fold increase in people coming in for the shot.

The cost is about $64, but Hersemann said that most insurance plans cover the price.
