PEORIA--Memorial Day is right around the corner, but local veterans and community members are paying tribute to all service members now.
A special Memorial Day service took place at Parkview Cemetery this afternoon.
It featured members of the Tazewell Military Rites team, Peoria High School's JROTC Cadets, and Peoria County Sheriff's Honor Guard.
Many came out to pay their respects to all who defended the nation's freedom.
Lieutenant Kyle Thomas says the sacrifices of U.S. soldiers should be celebrated all year long.
"I think it's just important to set aside today and say thank you," said Thomas. "Don't forget them. Memorialize them. They are our heroes."
A Memorial Day service will also be held Sunday at Springdale Cemetery.
Members of the VFW Post 814 will officiate.
