PEORIA--Nearly 600 people united in spirit and strength to honor police officers killed in the line of duty.

The sixth annual "Run to Remember" took place at Peoria's Junction City Shopping Center today.

It raises money to help loved ones of the fallen rebuild their lives.

Proceeds go towards counseling and group retreats with other surviving family members.

For 20 dollars, people could support the cause.

Norma Walsh lost her son in 2004.

She says it touches her heart to see so many people pay tribute to those who lost their lives keeping others safe.

"They understand, and it's just been such a great organization that I really...I just love everyone in it. And we are just like family," said Walsh.

Organizers hope to raise more than $11,000 dollars.

Nearly 1,000 officers nationwide have been killed in the line of duty since 2007.
