PEORIA - A multi-billion dollar transportation project could mean better roads and more jobs in central Illinois.
IDOT officials unveiled its "Transforming Transportation for Tomorrow" initiative Tuesday morning. The roads project will run through 2018.
$90 million will be spent on improving bridges and roads on I-74 and I-155 near Morton. Some of those improvements include turning I-74 into three-lane traffic and replacing Jefferson Street tunnels with bridges.
IDOT officials say these projects will bring more than 1000 jobs to the area over the next six years.
"I think we're making some significant investments in this area," said Ann Schneider, IDOT Secretary. "We are interested in the jobs that those investments can create."
The first phase of the project will begin in March of 2013.
