Our Pair of Extra Effort Award Winners this week might look a lot alike, but it's their differences that make them special.
They are two members of the Dee-Mack attack...Indentical in almost every way...Danny and Steven Maurer both play three sports for the chiefs...football, basketball and baseball. When Danny went out with a broken bone in his face a few weeks ago, the team rallied around him.
Ron Leitner, Dee-Mack Head Coach, says, "I've been battling the injury bug since day one since we started, said Ron Leitner, Dee-Mack Head Coach. "Lost my shortstop and center fielder. We've been fitting pieces and filling sports right now."
Now Danny has returned to the field, avoiding surgery and playing through pain...he says
he's thankful to be back with all of his baseball brothers.
"It's just fun playing with the same guys. Playing your whole high school
career and getting to know them pretty well," said Danny Maurer, Dee-Mack Senior, "We're almost like a family. Couldn't ask for anything better."
You see, it's not all just about sports in the Maurer household.
The Twins are also involved in a lot away from the diamond and school. Steven wants to be an industrial engineer and has done an internship with Caterpillar. Danny has worked with Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Being in a close relationship with a twin...has taught the pair to reach out and create those bonds with others in the workplace.
"I work with management and on the floor in East Peoria. Neat experience getting to know everyone and learn new things," said Steven Maurer, Dee-Mack Senior.
While the Maurers take on several responsibilities, they have one clear job. Getting Dee-Mack to the State tournament.
