An amendment added to a bill, which would ban sending text message while driving, passed the Illinois Senate Transportation Committee Monday. The bill, which has already passed the Illinois House, would allow police to pull over and ticket drivers texting while behind the wheel. Under the proposed law, you could still text if your car was parked. Supporters estimate 120 people died a week nationwide from using their cell phones or texting while driving. Opponents wonder how police are going to be able to tell whether people are texting or just using their cell phones for calls, which would not be barred.
